Life in the Slow Lane

Relaxing day in paradise...err...Minnesota. I guess if being able to sit back and relax is a qualification then Minnesota, during the summer, definitely qualifies for a relaxing destination. Today I went with my grandfather out to breakfast at the cafe at Boutwell's a retirement community where everyone knows everyone (even if they can't remember each other's names). You can tell a lot about a retirement community just by walking the halls, people here are smiling, waving and singing and all seem eager to get on with their day. It gives one a sense of hope and joy that after many years of hard work my grandfather is able to live his life in a place that makes him feel good about himself and my grandmother's passing a year ago, though still always on his mind, hasn't devastated his ability to continue to live.

After breakfast I put in a little work and then we drove into downtown Stillwater (the birthplace of Minnesota) to meander the streets, look into the antique stores, eat some ice cream at the corner shop and watch the sternwheeler go beneath the bridge crossing the St. Croix River.

Tonight I get to meet the newest member of our family (Finnegan) and am as exciting to see what the little guy has done to my cousin and his family as I am to see him for the first time. I guess most of that I will uncover up at Ruttgers as Eric and I will have plenty of time to chat on the golf course.
